Currently 10.00/101234567891010.0/10 (1 user vote)Κατά ένα μεγάλο ποσοστό και κατά γενική ομολογία, όταν μια μπάντα προσπαθεί να παραγεμίσει την μουσική της με πολλά είδη, το αποτέλεσμα μοιάζει πολύ περισσότερο με χριστουγεννιάτικη γαλοπούλα παρά με το επιθυμητό ψαγμένο αποτέλεσμα. Και κάτι τέτοιες στιγμές έρχονται την επιφάνεια μπάντες σαν τους νεοσύστατους 'Airlines of Terror' να μας αποδείξουν ότι όταν διάφορα είδη συνδυάζονται με τον σωστό τρόπο, το κράμα αυτό ακούγεται ενδιαφέρον και όχι μόνο. Τα γειτονάκια μας από την Ρώμη σχηματίστηκαν από το κιθαρίστα των Novembre (μιλάμε για μεγάλη στροφή ο τύπος!) και ισχυρίζονται ότι παίζουν κάτι ανάμεσα σε death metal και grindcore. Και κάπου εδώ θα διαφωνήσω με το 'grindcore' και θα προσθέσω blues/jazz και heavy metal! Το άκρως παράδοξο με αυτόν τον δίσκο είναι ότι όσο περίεργοι κι αν σας ακούγονται οι παραπάνω συνδυασμοί, είναι αρκετά easy-listening. Σε αρκετές φάσεις διακρίνω ομοιότητες με Napalm Death, Brutal Truth και Carcass, ενώ δεν λείπουν τα σημεία του 'χμμμ, τι έγινε τώρα;'. Το 'Bloodline Express' μπορεί να μην είναι και το εξπρές του μεσονυκτίου, αλλά σίγουρα αξίζει την προσοχή σας!

Italien ist, was Metallisches angeht, hauptsächlich für Bombast, Speed und Power bekannt, doch dass die pizzabackende Nation auch grindendes Todesblei schmiedet und dabei auch noch Spaß versteht, hört sich für mich neu an. Den Beweis treten nun das Trio von AIRLINES OF TERROR an.
Schon Titel wie „Blood Stained Bananas“ oder „Disorient Express“ zeigen, dass Demian, Giuseppe und Paolo sich nicht immer ernst nehmen und so bauen sie im Opener „Disorient Express“ einige Folkelemente ein und liefern in Kombination mit bösem Death/Grind die richtige Saufmucke. Auch „Polizei Zombie“ macht nicht nur wegen seinem abgefahrenen Text Spaß, denn der Groover lädt auch zum Headbangen und Abgehen ein. Musikalisch kann man den Jungs nichts gravierend Negatives nachweißen, denn ihr Handwerk verstehen die Männer auf jeden Fall. So gibt es schöne Leads, gute Soli, knackige Riffs und saubere Rhythmik zu vernehmen. Auch „Spagetthi Western Death“ hält was es verspricht und kommt mit Hillbilly Sounds daher, während „Once Upon A Time In Nagasaki“ neben bösen Grind-Attacken mit coolen Melodien überzeugen kann.
Auch wenn nicht viel zu bemängeln ist, so hat man es dennoch nicht mit einem Meisterwerk in Sachen Death zu tun, aber das Debüt „Blood Line Express“ sollte jede Party in Schwung bringen und bei diversen Aftershow-Partys für mächtig Stimmung sorgen.

Non posso negare di aver sorriso un attimo dopo aver letto questo nome e di aver quasi riso appena realizzato che si trattava di roba di casa nostra.
Ma non pensate a forme di disprezzo ne tantomeno ad atteggiamenti di sufficienza: il mio sesto senso, semplicemente, mi rimandava, con la memoria, ad un (probabile?) incrocio tra la dissacrazione uber alles di Elio E Le Storie Tese e il cazzeggio piu’ disimpegnato dei S.O.D., magari passando per la galleria di immagini tragicomiche/semiserie di Mondocane Project, in quello strettissimo passaggio dove non capisci mai se chi stai ascoltando e’ davvero convinto o sta solo prendendoti per il culo (o tutte e due le cose e siamo punto a capo…).
La mia impressione rinforzava man mano che scorrevo i titoli del cd ma una piacevolissima sensazione andava parallelamente crescendo: questi tre cazzaroni riuscivano a rendere l’idea di “disimpegno” in maniera perfetta anche e soprattutto a livello sonoro e – attenzione – non prendetelo assolutamente come uno scadimento o mancanza di qualita’, tutt’altro.
AOT trasmette, in primis, un senso di leggerezza, di approccio disimpegnato, meglio ancora, la volonta’/necessita’ di trattare tematiche serie, anche importanti senza per questo dover forzatamente prendersi (troppo) sul serio e questo ha una doppia valenza perche’ rende perfettamente la cosa a livello lirico e soprattutto – cosa non facile – a livello musicale.
Ora: tutta questa premessa era doverosa vieppiu’ considerando il genere suonato dai nostri tre allegroni, dove la (spesso innaturale) seriosita’ dei toni e la grevezza degli atteggiamenti prevedono reazioni emotive che quasi mai contemplano l’ilare, il bizzarro, l’ ironico: questo, AOT lo esprime benissimo, a doppio livello, la sdrammatizzazione – musicale, sonora, soprattutto – riesce loro alla perfezione. Come?
Beh, un grosso aiuto Cristiani, Orlando e Rossi (a proposito, quest’ultimo suona anche nei Fleshgod Apocalypse tanto apprezzati dal Krat…) lo attingono da basi perlomeno “sgarbate” al genere in oggetto, e non intendo contaminazioni ma proprio basi, con le quali la band costruisce un fulgido esempio di modern-death senza barriere – e senza storcere la bocca – arricchito da una azzeccatissima produzione che lo fa suonare magnificamente, dinamico, poderoso e attuale, grazie anche ad una decisa volonta’ di non lasciarsi castrare da stereotipi e barriere.
In questo senso l’iniziale “Disorient Express”, evoluta intorno ad una coinvolgente ritmica western, e’ un capolavoro esemplare, efficace come una bomba termonucleare e godibile e gustosa come una birra fresca in estate e il resto del disco semplicemente gli va’ dietro; passaggio blues o riff rockegiante, in ogni frangente il segreto di questo gruppo e’ tutto qui, efficacia, spensierato coinvolgimento e sound (lo ripeto) da applausi.
Davvero, non e’ da tutti suonare e rendere death metal in tal maniera: in un mondo di tronfie pseudo-orchestre sinfoniche gravosamente e grottescamente impegnate a darsi un tono di importanza e serieta’ trionfa il gustosissimo avanspettacolo sotto le luci della ribalta.

Giungono al debut full length i nostrani Airlines of Terror, creatura formata dal terzetto Demian Cristian, Giuseppe Orlando e Paolo Rossi, con attività presente e passata in gruppi del calibro di Novembre e Fleshgod Apocalypse, dopo un paio di demo ed uno split album, di cui "Our Planes Are Unhijackable" già recensito qui su Metal.it dal nostro Sergio Rapetti.

"Blood Line Express" si presenta come un disco a dir poco intelligente ed interessante, pieno zeppo di diverse influenze e sonorità, ma assemblate così con gusto e savoir-faire che il risultato finale scorre via liscio e gradevole come se nulla fosse.
Un concentrato davvero ben assortito di death metal, con punte di brutal grind, passando dal rock, al noise, elementi più spiccatamente melodici, sprazzi di blues ed addirittura reminescenze folk, come nell'incredibile opener "Disorient Express" (no, non stiamo parlando dei Dhamm), che passa nel giro di pochi secondi e riffs dal death metal più marcio - e convincente! - all'apparente stramberia canticchievole del chorus, prima di ripartire in tutta la sua brutalità e genialità.
Particolarmente convincente la prova del buon Demian dietro il microfono, che alterna sapientemente growls terribilmente efficaci e gutturali a linee più scream e rabbiose, mentre come al solito impeccabile la prova alla batteria da parte di Giuseppe Orlando, semplicemente terremotante.

Mezz'ora di musica con la M maiuscola, cerebrale ma non fine a sè stessa, impegnata ma non stancante, facilmente assimilabile ma non banale e puerile: è questo il vero segreto e la marcia in più degli Airlines of Terror, il saper miscelare tanta follia con lucida semplicità. Oltre alla già citata opener ne sono sapienti esempi la trascinante "Polizei Zombie", "Thy Bestial Blues" che dal titolo è tutto un programma e la malinconica "Screen Poker Junkie", ma in generale il disco non soffre di cali compositivi o vuoti di ispirazione. Perfetta la produzione, ottenuta com'è ovvio agli Outer Sound Studios, con il tocco di classe del mastering eseguito ai Finnvox di Mika Jussila in Finlandia.

Bene ha fatto la Rising Records a puntare sugli Airlines, un gruppo che consigliamo a chiunque abbia la mente sgombra ed aperta all'estremo, in ogni senso.

Remember Novembre? Italian, hirsute, two brothers, supported Opeth on one of their earlier trips over to the UK? Completely screwed by sound problems at the Underworld? Well, one of the brothers, Giuseppe Orlando, and a former bass player, Demian Cristiani, got together with Fleshgod Apocalypse’s Paolo Rossi to form Airlines of Terror. The result? A really bouncy half hour (ok slightly more) of very brutal, but ultimately catchy and bouncy grindy death.
This is one of those releases which is so completely not what you would expect, that the first time I heard it, I had to press play again as soon as it finished. I mean, bouncy brutality? The images that come to mind are extremely strange, buxom ladies with chainsaws and gimp masks being a favourite. (Well, when I say favourite, I’m not sure that that’s quite the word...) This is very similar to the relationship between Impaled Nazarene and The Black League, in that an offshoot band has gone in a really weird direction to prove that musicianship can triumph over any genre. Because at the end of the day, that’s what has happened here. Airlines of Terror have produced something that is very, very brutal (you can see why the French for drums is “batterie”) but still a great listen. The guitars race along at warp speed, forming a counterpoint to the towering megaliths of sound produced by said drums, and the rich growls of Signor Cristiani.
But the absolute best thing about this album is the track titles and the lyrics. How could you not love a post-apocalyptic vision called “Blood Stained Bananas?” The band, apparently, wanted to create the musical equivalent of a Tarantino movie. “Pulp Fiction” rather than “Reservoir Dogs”. For my money, they’ve succeeded. This is a hugely enjoyable romp, that doesn’t want to be taken too seriously, and is all the better for it.

AIRLINES OF TERROR - Bloodline Express [2010 LP]

Senza esagerate pretese questo full lenght dei romani Airlines of Terror. Nati dall'unione di Demian Cristiani (chitarra e voce, ex Novembre) e Giuseppe Orlando (batteria, Novembre), con il bassista Paolo Rossi (Fleshgod Apocalypse), i nostri si definiscono una Death/Grind band with Rocking parts, e uso esattamente le loro parole le quali descrivono al meglio la linea complessiva di Bloodline Express.
Respiriamo nell'ascoltarlo tutte le caratteristiche di un Grindcore arricchito da brevi passaggi melodici e da qualche striatura Rock n'Roll, che conferiscono a questo tipo di sound un timbro serio, tecnico e deciso. Un lavoro nel complesso accurato e non noioso, vuoi per la durata dei pezzi, che non superano i 3 minuti e 51 secondi, vuoi per la particolarità delle liriche e della scelta stilistica di unire Death a sonorità diverse, accorpando tutto decisamente bene.
Come anticipavo, pare che i nostri non abbiano in ogni caso la pretesa di irrompere con esagerati virtuosismi, ma, al contrario deliziano con un calibrato utilizzo di strumenti e conoscenze. Tutto questo non puo' che rivelarsi presagio di futuri lavori altrettanto validi e mi auguro anche un po' piu' incazzati.

Bock auf Rock? Gut, denn die Italiener von Airlines of Terror sind mit ihrem ersten Album am Start! Vielleicht mag man sich noch an mein letztes Review erinnern, nämlich an Helltrains Route 666. Eines haben die italienischen Kollegen mit den Schweden auf jeden Fall gemeinsam: sie rocken dir den Arsch weg! Wobei man klar sagen muss, dass die Terrorfluglinien differenzierter und abwechslungsreicher zu Werke gehen. Hier klingen nicht etwa alle Songs gleich, sondern jeder entfaltet seine ganz eigene Wirkung auf den Zuhörer. Die Instrumente sind tight gespielt, die Melodielinien hitverdächtig und das Schlagzeug liefert schön bollernde Deathrock-Beats. Ausserdem growlt der Sänger ziemlich cool.

Ich habe das Album nun schon viele Male komplett durchgehört und ich muss sagen, es wird nicht sehr schnell langweilig. Die Musik ist einfach ... cool. Ja, so lässt sich das wohl am besten umschreiben. Deathgrind gepaart mit Rock gab's zwar auch schon, das Genre (zum Teil auch Death'n'Roll genannt) erfreut sich aber noch nicht sehr grosser Beliebtheit. Ich frage mich allerdings, warum das so ist?! Wem das normale Rockzeug zu leicht ist und der "richtige" Deathmetal zu hart, sollte eigentlich zu Airlines of Terror und Konsorten greiffen. Klar, leicht verdaulich ist zwar auch Bloodline Express für den Durchschnittsmusikhörer nicht, auch ich musste mich erst mit dem Sound anfreunden. Hat man das aber einmal geschafft, geht's richtig rund! Und ja, auch auf dieser Platte sind einige echt starke Hits vertreten, die dem Zeug in den Charts in Sachen Eingängigkeit eigentlich in nichts nachstehen!

Disorient Express wartet mit einem sehr leicht merkbaren Refrain auf, den man innerhalb von Sekunden mitgröhlen kann. Ich würde mal vom Schiff aus sagen (hab's noch nicht selbst getestet), dass man zu dieser Art von Musik sehr gut mit den Kumpels einen heben kann. Eine etwas schrägere Nummer ist dann Bloodstained Bananas, obwohl hier auch viel Wert auf oben genannte Eingängigkeit gelegt wurde. Ein absoluter Kracher ist Polizei Zombie, ein verflucht geiles Lied in Punkmanier, mit allem was so dazugehört, selbst das Riff erinnert eher an The Offspring als an Cannibal Corpse. Ganz klar am Fetzigsten ist aber Premiata Macelleria Cristiani, was höllisch groovt und durchgehend gute Abwechslung bietet.

Ja, wiedermal eine Scheibe, die man in sein Auto legt und nie wieder rausnimmt. Ich glaube tatsächlich, dass man zu Airlines of Terror tanzen kann ... Also an einer Party mit Volk ohne Scheuklappen garantiert auch keine verkehrte Wahl! Als seichte Hintergrundmusik ist der Stoff ebenfalls geeignet. Was will man noch mehr? Eine fette Produktion (die vor allem den Bass schön wummern lässt) wurde der Scheibe ja auch schon verpasst. Das Songwriting ist für Deathmetalverhältnisse extrem gut, Langeweile kommt in dieser halben Stunde wirklich zu keiner einzigen Sekunde auf. Knüppelfetischisten, die einmal etwas Abwechslung brauchen und Leute, die müde vom alltäglichen Rock'n'Roll sind, sollten definitiv ein oder zwei Ohren riskieren!!

Like a Tarantino film in music format screams Airlines Of Terror's Myspace, and its a fitting analogy. Expect 31 minutes of engagingly bonkers tunes. String musicianship takes over when the novelty fades making this one of the more interesting heavy albums of 2010. 7/10

There are sill a few telling signs - Cristiani's grumbled vocals wouldn't go amiss on a Brutal Truth track and the occasional splattering of blastbeats keeps things lively - but largely this is more of a straight up, death-influenced heavy metal affair. Still, with song titles like "Blood Stained Bananas" and "Spaghetti Western Death", what's not not to like?
